Liebe Hörerinnen und Hörer

Anlass zu dieser Sendung gab die Erinnerung an den Todestag von Präsident John F. Kennedy,  22. November 1963. Die Geschichte, die von Jimmy Dean erzählt wird geht aber weiter zurück ins Jahr 1943 als „Jack“ Kennedy, als junger Marine Offizier Kommandant von Torpedo Boat PT 109 war. Jimmy Dean doppelt dann nach mit „Big John“. Aus einer LP aus dem Jahr 1960 hören Sie Johnny Cash. Er fährt mit der Eisenbahn vom Osten an die Westküste, besucht  geschichts-trächtige Städte und verlorene Nester und erwähnt die Namen von über 40 Indianerstämmen, die Amerika bewohnten bevor die Konquistadors aus Spanien und die Einwanderer aus Europa kamen. RedSovine, von „Teddy Bear“ her bekannt,  macht verdeckte Reklame für „Colorado KoolAid“ und Tennessee Ernie Ford erinnert sich an Davy Crockett, den Hinterwäldler und Pionier, der Tennessee in Washington D.C als Congressman vertrat und an der Spitze einer Handvoll Freiwilliger aus Tennessee in der Schlacht am Alamo bei San Antonio, Texas ums Leben kam. Schliesslich singen Lester Flatt und Earl Scruggs „The Ballad of Jed Clampett“ aus den Kentucky Hills, der durch Zufall eine Ölquelle erschloss, und mit seinem ganzen Clan nach Beverly Hills umzog.

If you areone  of the “older” generations, you’ll remember where you happened to be on November 22^nd, 1963, when the news of President John F. Kennedy’s death hit you. I for instance  was on board SWISSAIR with my family, returning to Chicago from a brief vacation in Switzerland.  However this show is not about that tragic day. The story which is told by Jimmy Dean goes back to 1943, when Jack Kennedy was commanding PT 109, which was rammed and cut in two by a Japanese war ship. Jimmy then doubles up with “Big John”, a legendary hero out of the Kentucky coal mines. Then, Johnny Cash takes you on a train ride from East to West. In this LP of 1960 Johnny rides through small and big towns with melodious names and mentions the names of over 40 Indian tribes who lived on this big and beautiful land before the conquistadores took over the West coast  and the settlers from Europe moved in from the East.

Red Sovine of “Teddy Bear” fame, talks of a break in a beer joint in Houston, Texas, where he enjoyed a Colorado Kool Aid and two drunks got into a fight and Tennessee Ernie Ford recalls the story of Davy Crockett, the Tennessian who served a spell in Washington, DC , then led a handful  volunteers in the Battle of the Alamo. To cap it all, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs recount how Jed Clampett discovered an oil well, became a millionaire and moved with his entire clan to Beverly Hills, California.

Well then friends and neighbors come on in and ride this train!
